Beverly Hills has always stirred mixed feelings for me. I’ve long been turned off by the extravagance and the endless cycle of luxury meant to signal status and worth. It can feel like a place where enormous resources are spent simply to stand out, while so many other parts of the world could benefit from that same energy and wealth.

And yet, Southern California has a beauty that’s impossible to ignore. The towering palm trees, the endless blue sky, and the warmth of the light create a visual rhythm that feels unmistakably Californian. Looking up at these palms, I found myself drawn to the quiet elegance that exists alongside the spectacle.

In Beverly Hills, the palms rise above bold horizontal bands of color, hinting at both the layered nature of the place and the contrast between surface and depth. While Beverly Hills can appear shallow at first glance, there is still beauty to be found if you pause and look beyond the obvious. This painting is my way of acknowledging both sides of that experience.
